(a quick note from Mark)

God's Heart for the Poor

Are you willing to do something you have never done before, try some things that you have never tried, so you can go to a place where you have never been?

Are you willing to do something stupid, so God can do something profound?

Consumer Christianity - where you look to the church to get your needs met
                                                           VS
Compassionate Christianity - where you walk with God to see God use you to meet the needs of others

Four Characteristics of Compassionate Christianity:

     1)    Radical Commitment - Matt. 6

 2)   Radical Serving - Jesus came to serve not to be served.

 3)     Radical Worship- Romans 12 - it releases the will of God.

4)    Radical gifting - Proverbs 19:17 - "He who is gracious to the poor, lends to the Lord and He will repay him for his good deed."

The word poor is used 37 times in the New Testament. Only 1 time is it meant the poor in spirit. The other times it means the physical poor.

Three types of Churches:

    1)   Church to the poor.

2)   Church of the poor.

3)    The Sodomite Church

Ezk.16:49 - Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had arrogance, abundant food, and careless ease, but she did not help the poor and needy.

City Transformation: Must touch the poor and the rich. It is easy to identify the needs of the poor. The way you touch the rich is by getting the rich to give (time & money) to the poor.

This releases the power of God.

Matt. 9:35-38 - Until you have passion for Jesus you will never have compassion for the lost.

Compassion releases the power of God.

Displaced compassion.
